Maximising lean muscle growth: Insulin

Insulin is the known as the ‘storage hormone’ this powerful hormone can work in our favour and against us. If insulin levels are high at the wrong time it can promote fat storage, for muscle growth we want high levels of insulin after a workout, this will cause amino acids to be driven into the muscle for repair and growth.

Stick to eating low to medium GI carbs throughout the day, except immediately post workout, at this point we want to create a big surge in insulin to maximise growth. Consume a high GI carbohydrate source such as glucose powder along with whey protein within 30 minutes of completing your workout to provoke a strong muscle building response.
