Why is Britain getting fatter?

By 19 December , 2013Fat Loss, Uncategorized

There are an increasing number of reports and studies that tell us Britain is getting fatter, issues are starting with children as young as those in primary school. Many people follow ‘low fat diets’ to try and stay in shape thinking it will help, yet, as a nation, we are getting fatter and fatter. There are a variety of reasons why this is happening, some more obvious than others.

  • The British high carb diet. Diets high in carbohydrates will keep insulin levels elevated for longer, insulin is the fat storage hormone and we cannot burn fat in the presence of it. The simple fix is to decrease high starchy foods such as bread, pasta, rice, potatoes and replace them with high protein foods such as meat, fish and eggs.
  • Toxicity. Toxins make our energy producing centres, the mitochondria, sluggish. They can slow down the thyroid and excess toxicity promotes fat storage. In modern society toxic chemicals surround us and our livers are pushed into overdrive! The excess toxins are stored in the fat cells until the liver can deal with them again. To reduce toxicity and promote fat loss, take a liver support formula in the morning, reduce exposure to chemicals and eat real food! Avoid all man made foods and you’ll reduce your toxic exposure and promote fat loss.
  • Stress. Whether it’s psychological or physiological, stress increases the demand for a hormone called cortisol. Cortisol is like a low grade adrenaline and is vital as a stress response. Unfortunately long term exposure promotes insulin resistance and fat storage, especially on the belly. You can read my article on stress/belly fat and to find out what to do about it.
  • Lack of activity.  From an early age our exercise decreases every year. As we get older and go to school we sit down for longer and longer and play less and less. Then we spend hours on end studying at university to get a job where we’ll sit down for 8 hours plus a day. These processes make us lazy, age quicker and of course get fatter!   The solution? Join a gym, employ a trainer and get moving 3 – 5 times a week!
