Consuming plants is beneficial for our health in a myriad of ways.
Protection against disease
- Specific plant chemicals called Phytonutrients can help protect us from many chronic diseases including cancer and heart disease.
High in fibre
- Most plant based foods are high in fibre and a fibre rich diet can promote longevity, satiety and weight loss.
- Most plants are rich in micro-nutrients (vitamins and minerals) and relatively lower in macro-nutrients (calories), therefore adequate consumption can promote health, weight loss and longevity
- When dieting it’s easy to end up focusing on counting calories and getting adequate protein but don’t underestimate the importance of optimal dietary plant intake as well. My recommendations are to aim to consume between 8 and 12 different plants everyday, this is a lot easier than you think, I’m not just talking about vegetables here, I’m also including fruits, nuts, seeds, green tea, black coffee, cacao and other legumes. Aim for organic and locally produced when possible
