Grounding (aka earthing) simply refers to being in contact with the earth’s surface.

This can be achieved by simply walking, running or standing barefoot outside or swimming in the ocean.

The Earth’s surface is charged with negative electrons, we absorb these electrons when we have direct skin contact with the earth, these have been shown to have a beneficial antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect on the body.

Grounding regularly can lead to a wealth of health benefits including:

  • Stress reduction
  • Improved mood
  • Improved sleep
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Reduced pain
  • Faster recovery from exercise

Reality check!

Obviously being in contact with the ground for extended periods of time isn’t usually practical in this modern age but grounding can easily be mimicked by using grounding mats or bedsheets which are simply plugged into the mains. I have one of each ?

What the research says.

The research speaks for itself but the reality is you need to give these things a go to truly understand the benefits.

The last research article, titled ‘Oxidative Stress and Psychological Disorders’,  highlights a growing body evidence of a strong link between cognitive disorders such as anxiety and depression with increased oxidative stress and inflammation in the brain, this provides one potential mechanism of how grounding can help in these circumstances.
